What does a moisturiser do exactly?

They reduce the evaporation of water content from the skin and hydrates it.Since the exposed parts like face and hands are more prone to dehydration, they become dry.Moisturizers fill the spaces in the skin hence avoiding transepidermal water loss.the humectants present in the moisturisers will absorb moisture from air.The emollients try to soothe the skin.Hence regular use of moisturisers is always necessary.

Moisturizers Constituents

Most of the moisturisers contain the natural oils ,lipids and sterols which are necessary for hydrating the skin.A quality moisturiser will essentially contain humectants(substances which can absorb moisture from the environment and hence retaining the moisture content of the substance in which they are present). They also contain some substances called emollients for smoothing the rough skin. The higher the spreading value, the better the quality of the emollient. They are occlusive in nature(prevents transepidermal water loss and hence retaining the best source of water to the skin. In commercial products, either honey or glycerin or fuller’s earth will be the most essential ingredient.
